Those days are old, thus are meant to be lost, no matter good or bad.

Our story takes place in an ancient canal town in 90s China. It was a time when a place so ancient like Oldtown also gets modernized, while losing something important. We tried to visually communicate about the beauty of nature, the calm of past days and the conflict between traditional and modern worlds.

Ying: concept and costumes showcase + props

The character I created for this project, Ying, was a child in the town who loves nature, the traditions and everything gifted by the town’s origin. She will be fighting against the adults who are trying to ruin the precious environment around the town for profit.

Ying: facial expression & gesture sheet

An important part of this pre-production was the “movement simulation“ — to see our characters on screen and moving around the story’s stage. I challenged myself with many different camera angles and expressions, attempting to sense this character alive in her world.

Rainy Day in Oldtown: Character on stage

Finally after all the preparation works, we had to see the character actually in their world to see whether if the character would really fit into the world in the right way. Considering the visual environment, story atmosphere, time and space background… Until I was able to say that this story, despite the script, has made its basic sense.
